On July 29, 2025, the Kouga region marked a significant achievement in youth development as three promising engineering students received bursaries to advance their educational pursuits. This accomplishment was made possible through a strategic partnership among Maximum Profit Recovery (MaxProf), EST Sourcing, and the Kouga Local Municipality.
During a ceremony filled with optimism, a total of R55,552 in bursaries was awarded to the selected students. Cedric Mataka, MaxProf’s Eastern Cape Regional Manager, and Kouga Executive Mayor, Cllr Hattingh Bornman, presented the awards. Mayor Bornman addressed the recipients, emphasizing that this initiative represents more than just financial assistance—it is a statement of belief in the capabilities of the region’s youth. He encouraged the students to dedicate themselves fully, strive for excellence, and seize the opportunities before them.
Deputy Municipal Manager, Mr. Dawie de Jager, also encouraged the students to remain focused and resilient in their studies, assuring them that discipline and perseverance would open doors throughout their lives. Mayor Bornman additionally acknowledged the pressing need for engineers in Kouga, expressing hope that these future professionals would one day return to contribute to the municipality.
A Targeted Corporate Social Responsibility Approach
This bursary initiative forms a key part of MaxProf’s corporate social responsibility program. Moving away from general donations, MaxProf now focuses specifically on bursary funding. Mataka noted, “Last year, we allocated a specific portion of our profit value to education. This year, we doubled that commitment, focusing solely on Kouga students.” This approach highlights how targeted support and strategic collaboration can yield meaningful, lasting impact within the community.
Among the bursary recipients, Esihle Mpumela (Mechanical Engineering, JBAY Tech) and Strong Athenkosi Sodlala (Electrical Engineering, PE College) expressed deep gratitude, promising to study diligently and give back to their community. The third recipient, Zukhanye Poti (Mechanical Engineering, Walter Sisulu University), was represented by his mother, who shared her immense joy and described the bursary as a source of hope and relief for their family.
This initiative stands as a powerful example of how partnerships between private organizations and local government can create transformative opportunities. With collaboration grounded in trust and clearly defined roles, such programs foster sustainable community growth and inspire future leaders to thrive.
