On February 3rd, the air at the uMgungundlovu District Municipality was thick with more than just summer heat, it was charged with the electric energy of success. The annual Matric Awards Excellence Ceremony gathered the brightest young minds of the KwaZulu-Natal 2025 class to celebrate a milestone achievement, but the day wasn’t just about looking back, it was about securing the future.
Recognizing the financial hurdles that often greet even the most successful students, EST Sourcing and MaxProf stepped up to ensure that excellence isn’t stalled by red tape.
A Critical Lifeline for Future Leaders
The transition from high school to university is often a race against the clock. While many students wait for NSFAS funding to clear, registration fees can become a daunting barrier. To tackle this, Sanjeevan Bisnath, Head of Operations at MaxProf, announced a pledge of R72,000 in bursaries specifically designed to cover those crucial registration costs. This isn’t a one-off gesture; it’s a sustained commitment to the district.
During the event, Bisnath highlighted the enduring partnership between EST Sourcing, MaxProf, and the uMgungundlovu District Municipality, noting that the organizations have “proudly been awarding bursaries” to the region for the past three years. He reaffirmed their ongoing support, citing the students’ consistent hard work and academic dedication as the primary motivation for the investment. “We will continue to do so because of your work and commitment in producing excellent results,” Bisnath stated, urging the recipients to view the financial support as a “stepping stone” to reach their full potential and eventually move on to “bigger things.”
The Secret to the 90.4% Success Rate
The ceremony was a star-studded affair in the world of governance, attended by dignitaries from various departments and mayors from all local municipalities within the district. The mood was one of collective pride for the KZN 2025 matric class, but the Honourable Mayor of uMgungundlovu Cllr. Mzi Zuma took to the podium to remind the audience of the “village” it took to raise these high achievers.
Cllr Mzi Zuma emphasized that the impressive 90.4% pass rate was not a fluke, stating firmly that without a fully functional parent-teacher relationship, such a result could not be achieved. He urged parents to remain active, collaborative partners in the educational journey to maintain this momentum. Furthermore, a special tribute was paid to the educators who went far beyond their call of duty, working extra hours and hosting study camps to ensure their students achieved their best. While the current results were stellar, the mayor set the bar even higher for the coming years, expressing his desire to see even more Pietermaritzburg learners represented in the top 10 of the KZN provincial excellence awards.
Empowering the Next Generation
For the students in the room, the day was a reminder that their hard work has been noticed by both the public and private sectors. The R72,000 pledge serves as a tangible vote of confidence in their potential.
By removing the immediate stress of registration fees, EST Sourcing and MaxProf are doing more than just donating money, they are buying these students time, peace of mind, and a clear path to their first lecture.
