Each year, the CIGFARO Annual Conference brings together key stakeholders in municipal finance, governance, and public sector service delivery. For over two decades, MaxProf has maintained a consistent presence at this prestigious forum, and 2025 was no exception.
Despite the growing concerns around declining support for the conference and the rising costs associated with participation, our team made the strategic decision to attend with a leaner delegation. This approach allowed us to balance cost-efficiency with impact, ensuring our brand remained visible and relevant in a space that continues to shape the future of municipal financial management.
Behind the Scenes: Planning and Preparation
Preparing for CIGFARO is no small feat. From coordinating logistics and accommodation to selecting the right team members, designing and building our exhibition stand, and curating marketing material. Every detail is meticulously planned. The investment, which runs into hundreds of thousands of rands annually, is always weighed against the potential return on investment (ROI).
In the public sector, ROI is a nuanced concept. Traditional sales metrics do not always apply, as procurement is largely governed by legislation such as the MFMA, PFMA, and GRAP. For MaxProf, the true value lies in brand awareness, legitimacy, and thought leadership.
Positioning Ourselves as Experts
With over 25 years of experience, MaxProf has earned its place as a trusted advisor in the realm of VAT and tax optimisation for municipalities. Participating in speaking slots, panel discussions, and presentations at CIGFARO allows us to showcase our expertise and reinforce our commitment to supporting municipalities in achieving financial sustainability.
This year, we extended our engagement beyond the conference floor by hosting a Durban Harbour boat cruise for delegates who responded to our open invitation. Under the glow of carrier boats and city lights, we shared insights on how municipalities can leverage VAT and tax optimisation to meet their obligations; from paying salaries to settling debts with ESKOM and SARS, all while fulfilling their service delivery mandates.
Looking Ahead
While the challenges of participation remain, the overall experience at CIGFARO 2025 was positive. The conversations we sparked, the relationships we strengthened, and the visibility we gained reaffirmed our decision to attend. We remain committed to supporting the public sector and will be returning in the coming year, with renewed energy and purpose.
